PHILADELPHIA _ The careers and lives of World Series managers Jim Leyland and Tony La Russa are wound together as tightly as the yarns inside a baseball.

Follow the bouncing ball.

They managed against each other in the minor leagues in the late 1970s. Respect was forged and a friendship took root.

When La Russa was manager of the Chicago White Sox, he hired Leyland to be his third-base coach from 1982 to 1985.
