DETROIT _ If, for some reason, he channel-surfed the TV on Saturday afternoon in his office at Comerica Park, Cardinals manager Tony La Russa may have come across a replay of Game 1 of the 1988 World Series on ESPN Classic.
That was the Kirk Gibson Game. Powered by will, the limping Gibson smashed the winning homer off Dennis Eckersley to carry the Los Angeles Dodgers over La Russa's universally favored Oakland A's. Oakland never recovered from the shock; La Russa's brawny beast fell in a great upset.
