Oct. 23--VETO -- Doug Gates grew up in the shadow of Veto Methodist Church. It's white painted poplar walls and steeple were a stark contrast to the maroon splotches of sumac on the roadsides and olive-toned foliage of the Tennessee hills. As a child, Gates and his family went before services and lit the gas heater. Then Gates would yank a rope that made the church bell peal throughout the countryside.
