Like many Westerners, my primary association with the Black Hills involves gargantuan images of famous presidents etched with jackhammers and dynamite in the cliffs of Rushmore. However, an invitation to lead an October photography workshop in Custer State Park a few years ago forever transformed my perception.
Besides finding and photographing the park's abundant antelope and bison, I also spotted a number of impressive whitetail bucks. Back home, a couple hours' research confirmed my suspicion--the Black Hills National Forest teems with whitetails, and harbors a small mule deer population as well.
