Arlene Raven, 62, art critic, theoretician, historian, poet, and above all pioneering and dedicated feminist, died on Aug. 1 of cancer. Chief art critic for the Village Voice in the 1980s, Raven was a co-founder, with Judy Chicago and Sheila de Bretteville, of the Feminist Studio Workshop at the legendary Woman's Building in Los Angeles, both established in 1973. Also in Los Angeles, Raven helped launch Chrysalis, an influential magazine covering women's issues and art. In 1977, she initiated the Lesbian Art Project, in which she took part as a performer; she was also a founder of the Women's Caucus for Art.
