Article: Murkowski may sign Alaska gas deal, bypass legislature.(signing a contract for a natural gas pipeline from the North Slope to Canada)

Alaska Gov. Frank Murkowski on Thursday said he's still considering signing a contract for a natural gas pipeline from the North Slope to Canada and the lower 48 despite the -state Legislature's refusal to approve the deal.

The statement is a reversal of the position Murkowski took publicly during his unsuccessful re-election campaign and contradicts the legal opinion of his own attorney general (OD Aug.24,p1).

"I'm not going to [enact the contract without legislative approval] for the simple reason that it would be litigated, and it's not in the state's interests to litigate something as important as this," Murkowski said on Aug. 7.
