Ruth Broyde-Sharone was riding around Los Angeles in her car in the spring of 2003 when she saw a billboard that read, "God and Allah Need to Talk."

The implications of the well-intentioned message immediately amused Ms. Broyde-Sharone, a documentary filmmaker engaged in Jewish-Muslim dialogue since the early 1990s.

"It made me laugh. That would be like God talking to himself. A God who has multiple personalities."

But the billboard also gave rise to some dismay. "How could Allah be seen as different from God unless Muslims were seen as different from everyone else?" she asked.
