It has become fashionable in some circles to attack the Endangered Species Act (ESA) as a law that puts the needs of plants, fish and wildlife above those of humans. In recent years, the timber, mining and other industries that profit by extracting resources from public lands have used the ESA as the centerpiece of a multi-million dollar campaign to undo environmental regulation across the country. Real estate speculators and shopping mall developers also jumped on the bandwagon as the self-appointed protectors of private property rights.
