South Korea is the fourth largest economy in Asia, and the twelfth biggest economy in the world. So changes in its consumer base are of some note.

On August 25, 2006, United Press International (UPI), citing Korea's National Statistics Office (NSO) as its source, reported that the country's birth rate dropped to a new low. "The crude birthrate was 9 births for every 1,000 residents -down from 9.8 in 2004, 10.3 in 2003 and 13.4 in 2000," said the newswire.
