Oct. 24--Next year will be three decades since Ira Upin, then a young home renovator and aspiring artist, and his wife decided to move into a former bakery in the 700 block of North American Street in Northern Liberties. Back then Upin, 58, was part of a vanguard of young people -- some called them "hippies" -- and for years Northern Liberties remained a tightly knit village of old and new residents united in the transformation of the old industrial district. These days, however, with multi-unit condominiums rising throughout Northern Liberties and the population expanding, those ties that bind have grown tougher to maintain. ...
