Estonia must pay full sugar fine-Fischer Boel.(European Policy News)(Brief article)

Estonia will have to pay in its entirety the 46 million [euro] fine imposed by the European Union for stockpiling sugar in the months before accession in 2004, EU Agriculture Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel said last week.

The fine amounts to the equivalent of around 35 [euro] per person in the country of 1.3 million.

The 46 million [euro] figure "is final", Fischer Boel told reporters in Tallinn (reports Agence France Presse).

"Estonia's accession treaty makes it very clear: it's not possible to separate the amount of sugar meant for private consumption from the amount meant for commercial use."
