Reform of the European wine regime must not lead to an industrialisation of the sector or the destruction of its heritage, a group of French and Italian producers of wine with geographical indications (GIs) told journalists in Tuscany last week.
"The European Commission proposal favours the development of an industrial type wine," claimed Riccardo Ricci Curbastro, President of the Italian National Confederation for Voluntary Consortia for the protection of the Denomination of Origin (FEDERDOC).
Under the Commission's reform plans, he claimed, "it would be possible to plant vines anywhere, without any restrictions on the production."
