EU opts against further sugar quota withdrawal.(European Policy News)(Brief article)

The EU sugar market is stable enough to prevent the European Commission having to withdraw a percentage of quota sugar for the 2006/2007 marketing year, the Sugar Management Committee announced on Thursday.

Under the regulation governing the reform of the EU sugar regime in November 2005, the European Commission has a mandate to 'withdraw' a percentage of quota sugar if the market situation so demands (see AE2184, 25.11.05, EP/1).

But member states agreed unanimously during the Management Committee meeting that latest balance sheet forecasts indicated that such reductions would not be necessary for the current (2006/07) year.
