The European Union is to force all US exporters of long-grain rice to retest their product at the port of entry into the EU to ensure that it is not tainted with unauthorised genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
The European Commission took the decision after the US authorities failed to agree a common sampling and testing protocol that would make sure the long-grain rice did not contain traces of the GM rice LL601, which has not been authorised in the EU.
