FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. _ The Florida Supreme Court on Thursday threw out the death sentence for a former librarian who beat two ex-girlfriends to death with hammers in slayings that happened 20 years apart.
The state's highest court ruled the trial judge should not have disregarded evidence and testimony from six mental health experts who found that William Coday was seriously mentally ill and unable to "conform his conduct to the requirements of the law" when he killed Gloria Gomez in 1997 in Fort Lauderdale. That was a mitigating factor that should have been considered, the appeals court found.
