Oct. 27--South Africa's historic transformation from racist oppression to rainbow democracy wasn't just one of the greatest dramas of the 20th century. It also was one of the most ironic. As I was reminded on my brief visit there last week, the apartheid-era government justified its oppressive policies by proclaiming itself a defender of Western capitalism against the Communist menace.
