Companions are a difficult genre. Should they be fresh and thought-provoking? Or should they survey, looking to facilitate an understanding of present critical discussions? Ideally they should do both, so distinguishing themselves from the collection of previously written essays and the more conservative histories and introductions. In practice, however, such a combination is a rare achievement. Here the two essays that best strike that balance are those of Kate Chedgzoy and Garrett A. ...
