NEW YORK - Martin Whitman isn't the retiring type.
At an age when most of his contemporaries have long since hit the proverbial golf course, the veteran portfolio manager seems to be hitting his stride.
Over the past five years, the octogenarian's Third Avenue Value fund, managed by Third Avenue Management LLC of New York, has delivered consistently strong performance. It was up 15.32% on an annualized basis for the five-year period through last Thursday, beating the Standard & Poor's 500 stock index by 8.51 percentage points over that span and beating 87% of its mid-cap-blend peers.
