HPD seeks to reduce number of false alarms.

Oct. 28--HARLINGEN -- On a daily dispatch log, calls for business and residence alarms appear as often as traffic stops.

With the hopes of liberating resources and patrol officers, Police Chief Danny Castillo will meet with the City Commission next week to discuss a proposal to amend the city's alarm ordinance.

The regulation would have permit holders with repeat false alarms pay a service fee, he said.

In 2005, police responded to 5,105 alarms with 90 percent being false alarms, he said. So far this year, 98 percent of the 3,918 alarm calls were false.
