Oct. 29--For more than 70 years, since he was 18, Steve Miskisky would answer the alarm at the Greenlawn firehouse, regardless of weather or personal safety. The first fire truck he rode in then was a 1918 Model T pumper, where the boys would hop on the back or sideboards to race down the streets. Miskisky's last trips were in the newest 2001 Pierce rescue pumper, riding inside the cab with seat belts on.
Miskisky, a lifelong Greenlawn resident, died on Oct. 8 of natural causes. He was 93. A son of Polish parents, Miskisky was born in Greenlawn in 1913. He attended local schools, and after he married, he opened an ...
