Local hoteliers say they are cautiously optimistic about 1994, but they can't afford to be cautious about the state of their properties. Several of the area's top hotels are spending millions on site improvements.

The renovations, from cosmetic to structural, will help some hotels get an edge on increased market competition. In 1993, 875 new rooms were added to an already glutted market of 44,673 rooms, according to the San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau. Twenty-seven percent of San Diego County's hotel inventory is represented in the San Diego Business Journal's List of the 25 Largest Hotels. Ranking is based on the number of guest rooms.
