Oct. 29--Each state elevator inspector examines an average of 1,155 elevators per year. That's about 22 a week, or four to five each day. "I think they have a full day," said Norman Martin, Ohio's chief elevator inspector. "We want them to be busy. As of today, we're adequate." But Maryland mechanical and structural safety engineer Allen Bissell, who has studied elevator incidents such as the one that killed an Ohio State University student Oct. 20, called that "a huge workload."
