Oct. 29--The initial details radioed to firefighters and medics were sketchy yet unsettling:
"Man trapped under the elevator on the third floor."
Someone is trapped in an elevator every other day in Columbus. It was the word under that worried them.
Within seconds of arriving on the third floor of Ohio State University's Stradley Hall, they had no doubt that Andy Polakowski was dead. He had tried to escape a malfunctioning elevator, but it pinned his slender frame at the waist.
His torso lay with arms outstretched on the carpet of the third floor. Bent at the waist, his lower half hung inside the elevator.
