I had always taken thumbs for granted. Yes, thumbs are a little weird looking and lonely--sticking out there all by themselves, always working in opposition to the crowd.
Recent surgery on my thumb during this past school year gave me a whole new appreciation for this particular body part. I had no idea how handy thumbs really were until mine stopped working. The surgeon had said that my injury was a tendon and overuse problem. Me? Overuse my hands?
As an elementary art teacher, I had always taken my healthy hands for granted. Sure, my other joints had given me problems. Due to my "high mileage," I guess I had expected some wear and tear.
