The UK's Food Standards Agency (FSA) has altered its advice to retailers concerning rice that may be contaminated with an unapproved GM variety. The agency has reminded food businesses that any rice known to be contaminated with GM material is illegal and should be removed from sale.
The FSA's move comes despite the European Food Safety Authority's conclusion that rice containing trace levels of GM material is not likely to pose an imminent safety concern to the public.
In September, Friends of the Earth (FOE) began legal proceedings against the FSA for its failure to take appropriate action to prevent illegal GM rice from being sold to the public. ...
