Produced for French TV in 2000, this remarkable piece from veteran filmmaker Watkins is actually a faux documentary. On a large set, an ensemble of actors recreate La Commune, the name given to the French revolutionary proletarian government created by radicals in 1871. Mixing the past with the present--or rather present technologies --Watkins has two different TV crews report on the goings-on as they transpire. One crew, Commune TV, represents the Paris rebels and interviews a wide range of participants in the Commune.
