Oct. 28--PASCO, Wash. -- Before the art, architect Maya Lin has come to learn, comes the ceremony.
Native Americans would have it no other way. Members of several tribes from Lewiston, Idaho, to Ilwaco, Wash., have advised Lin about her creations since she accepted the commission in November 2000 to serve as artist for the history- and environment-themed Confluence Project.
On Friday, Lin participated in a blessing ceremony at Sacajawea State Park, at the confluence of the Snake and Columbia rivers. Umatilla, Walla Walla, Wanapum and Nez Perce drummers and singers led a ceremony at a grassy spot where the rivers meet.
