Oct. 30--Take that New York!

A month after the Big Apple held off the capitol of Silicon Valley for the top of the FBI's list of safest big cities, San Jose was named the safest city with more than 500,000 residents in a private firm's report released today.

City leaders have long touted San Jose's low crime rate as they courted businesses and potential residents to town. When the FBI numbers were released in September showing New York at the top of its list for 2005, most San Jose officials said they expected to be back on top in other tallies. The FBI had also ranked New York as the safest city in 2004.
