Afghanistan has shown that all the NATO countries are 'stretched' when it comes to the deployment of their security forces, says the US's Representative to NATO, Victoria Nuland. Speaking at an event on 30 October organised by the Brussels think tank CEPS, Nuland explained that the allies are working hard to keep up their operational tempo in countries from Afghanistan to Kosovo to Iraq to Darfur.
She said that collectively NATO is not spending enough on security and defence, and that it needs to spend more to keep up its commitments. "The US spends 3.7% of its GDP on defence, while the rest spend an average of 1.8% of their GDP on defence. Only seven countries ...
