RESPONDING to increased demand for medicine to treat and control animal disease, animal health companies increased the production of antibiotics for use in animals in 2005, according to the Animal Health Institute (AHI).

The use of antibiotics to maintain animal health and welfare is a critical tool for producers in providing a safe supply of meat, milk and eggs and for pet owners in caring for their companions, AHI said.
