COTTAGE GROVE - It would seem a hard sell, in an era of rising water prices, sewer rates and public scrutiny of government spending: Oregon's 50th-largest city spending $850,000 to buy a privately owned golf course.
But that's precisely what the Cottage Grove City Council voted unanimously to do last week. And City Manager Richard Meyers followed through, signing a deal to purchase the 15-year-old, 76-acre Middlefield Golf Course from land developer John Hammer.
