Bio marks 'Howl' 50th But details bog down Ginsberg story.(Spotlight)

This month marks the 50th anniversary of the publication of Allen Ginsberg's seminal poem, Howl, an event that arguably jump-started the birth of the beatgeneration as a literary and cultural revolution. It would be another year before Ginsberg's pal Jack Kerouac made the beats a worldwide phenomenon with the release of his novel, On The Road.

When he died in 1997 at age 70, Ginsberg had been famous (or, if you prefer, infamous) for more than 40 years. It had been a life of scandal and notoriety, of outrageous statement and flamboyant act.
