Introduction
John D. McArthur was one of the most successful railway builders in western Canada. He constructed a line in Manitoba, completed a portion of the Canadian Northern, and carried out contracts for both the Canadian Pacific and Grand Trunk railways.
In 1911, as owner of the Edmonton, Dunvegan & British Columbia railway, McArthur planned to extend his activities into the Peace River country, which was in the first throes of a land rush. He built the Dunvegan Yards on the northwestern outskirts of Edmonton for his railway headquarters and laid out plans for his new enterprise.
