Nov. 4--Workers at the Peppers Ferry Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant are using a very simple procedure to protect themselves from dangerous levels of hydrogen sulfide in part of the plant.
They're staying away from that part.
"We immediately restricted that area" after detecting hydrogen sulfide levels above 500 parts per million at a splitter box -- equipment that separates liquids from solids -- near the plant entrance, said Clarke Wallcraft, the plant's executive director.
Levels higher than 4 ppm are considered toxic. At 500 ppm, hydrogen sulfide can knock workers unconscious.
