Nov. 6--APPLE VALLEY -- At one time, Ted Smith knew practically everyone in the valley, and practically everyone knew him. The former salesman at Garrison Ford, who has passed away at age 92, was a pioneer in his own way -- the first black resident to buy property in Apple Valley when the covenants denied blacks and Jews.
But to his children, he was just "Daddy."
"People really liked Daddy," said his daughter Vivian Smith Carter.
"He was interested in them," added daughter Leslie Collette Smith. "Not so much giving advice but listening to them. And h e w a s n o t o n e t o a s k , ' W h at w a s her name?' He ...
