Introduction
The advance of acupuncture into mainstream healthcare in the West will inevitably subject the profession to a level of scrutiny it has not had to face to date. Issues such as standards of care and adverse response to treatment will be at the forefront, and unpleasant responses to treatment will be increasingly questioned by patients and other medical professionals. In anticipation of such developments, a differential framework for understanding the more common unpleasant responses to acupuncture treatment is required.
