Establishing a wine region in the 1990s takes more than vineyards. The diversity of grape sources available to wineries today demands that wine regions market themselves to gain competitive advantage. That's why, in 1991, the growers in Lake County, Calif., took the unusual initiative of creating an organization to represent their grapes in the marketplace; the Lake County Winegrape Commission.
