Sicca syndrome is an intractable and prolonged disease called 'dryness syndrome' in TCM. It is common in women over 40 years old and is characterised by severe dryness in the mouth and eyes. It may also be accompanied by pathological changes in the lungs, kidneys, liver and connective tissue. In Western medicine it is associated with auto-immune disease and rheumatoid arthritis in particular. In TCM the aetiology of the disease is pathological dryness combined with an underlying deficiency of body fluid due to poor body constitution, deficiency of yin, excess of yang and excess consumption of spicy food.
