Eritrea's mineral resources, especially oil and gold, show promise of early development.
Eritrea is in a very turbulent part of Africa: neighbouring Sudan and Djibouti are locked in bitter civil wars; Ethiopia, of which Eritrea used to be a province, is still nervously run by a "provisional" government.
Eritrea is also the newest country in Africa but, almost paradoxically, is one of the most stable. This has not come cheaply: few outsiders can appreciate the magnitude of Eritrea's 30-year armed struggle - a 'forgotten" war, totally outside any Cold War scenario.
