Traditionally, nutrient management has attempted to optimize the economic return from nutrients used to produce a crop. The main emphasis was on the expected crop response to added nutrients. In practice however, manure has not always been applied to optimize plant nutrient use. Under contemporary circumstances manure may be applied so that nutrients are in excess of plant needs, so that the nutrients are not available for crop growth at the optimum time, or so that they are released into the air or water.
