From the years I've spent around probation and parole offices, courtrooms, courthouse holding pens, secure hospital and psychiatric wards, and other correctional settings in New York, it's hard not to notice the unique quality of stress that often affects offenders and staff. This stress becomes a unique form of pain that operates not only at emotional and cognitive levels, but also on a physical level. How can we develop programs to alleviate stress in correctional settings?
