A primary consideration facing all teachers is how best to match instructional methodology with the needs and characteristics of their students. Much research has been devoted to the relative effectiveness of instructional strategies. Four review articles in the Journal of Behavioral Education (1991) provide excellent descriptions and discussions of four different instructional methods and how best to implement them. Kinder and Carnine describe the principles of Direct Instruction in establishing clear, unambiguous communication and maximal student response. Their analysis focuses on how direct instruction works with low-income students and students with disabilities.
