There are new career paths available for laboratory technicians at many chemical companies. Although statistics are not available, the trend is clear: many are crossing the barrier between technician's and chemist's careers. Why is this happening?
Chemical companies are finding that their customers want and need more technical support. Customers want to consult someone who understands their technical problems with a minimum of explanation. These consultants have to be able to either answer the question immediately, perform tests that will answer the question, or know who to contact for the answer. Many of these consultants are technicians or former technicians.
