Santa Monica's homeless population is, in the words of many industry representatives, "seriously" hurting the city's tourism business.
"It's the biggest problem we have here," said Gene Harries, general manager of the Pacific Shore hotel. "It's something that comes up all the time but there is no clear solution of what should be done about it."
Hotel operators and others in the city said the problem has to do with homeless people who panhandle around Santa Monica's tourist areas. In addition, the homeless are an eyeshore to tourists and conventioneers who come to the city for either a vacation or business meeting, the operators said.
