As we look to another new crop of seed products, it seems that the line between traits and genetics is getting fuzzier. Adding a single insect or herbicide-resistant trait is less exciting than it was 10 years ago. Now, companies talk about double- and triple-stacked hybrids. Quad stacks, with four biotech traits, are just over the horizon.

The result? More choices, bigger yields and higher profits for trait companies.

In a Citibank investor conference on Oct. 3, Monsanto Company's chief technology officer Robb Fraley revealed that in 2007, Monsanto plans to sell more triple-stacked corn hybrids than single-trait hybrids. ...
