There are some new wrinkles in the ancient art of distilling taking place on the west coast, with products ranging from a "traditional" Italian grappa made from Zinfandel to a completely indigenous North American spirit made from the root of the common sunflower, Helianthus annuus.
And the more traditional artisan brandy producers are doing just fine as well.
The man probably most responsible for creating the renaissance in west coast distilling is Jorge Rupf, founder and owner of St. George Spirits in Emeryville, just across the bay from San Francisco.
