The early years of the twentieth century saw a retreating Ottoman Empire fighting on several fronts for its survival. Italy's attack on Tripoli in 1911 and the Balkan War of 1912-13 only paved the way for Ottoman Turkey's unfortunate drift into the First World War on the side of Germany and the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
