PORTAGE -- Trailing 7-0 with 28 seconds remaining in a WIAA Division 4 state semifinal football game Saturday night, Evansville coach Ron Grovesteen believed he did the right thing on fourth-and-goal at the Mayville 2-yard line.
"We called 23 dive," Grovesteen said. "We thought it was the right call."
Unfortunately for the Blue Devils, Mayville's Michael Nied stuffed tailback Derek Cashore at the 1, preserving the shutout victory for the Cardinals and sending them to their first state final since 1994.
"It was a really outstanding play," Mayville coach Tom Noennig said. "Michael Nied stepped up real big."
