Article: Redondo Beach pier comes back from store, fire.

A crane working on a platform in the waters off Redondo Beach one day in March reached a claw into the ocean and pulled up a stove.

The stove is believed to have once been part of Cattleman's restaurant, which fell into the ocean on May 27, 1988, when a spectacular fire destroyed the horseshoe-shaped city pier.

Prior to the fire, the pier had been battered and weakened by a January 1988 storm in which 20-foot waves slammed into the wooden structure.

The fire and storm left intact another, straight pier, called the Monstad Pier, but Redondo Beach's U-shaped pier, which stood alongside it, was gone.
