BAGHDAD, Iraq -- More than 400 people recently lined the streets of Hampton, Va., for the funeral of U.S. Airman 1st Class LeeBernard E. Chavis. He had been shot and killed by a sniper while on duty as a turret gunner of an armored truck patrolling the streets of Baghdad.
The 21-year-old airman had left the shelter of the turret to warn Iraqi civilians of a possible roadside bomb. For his bravery, LeeBernard was posthumously awarded a Purple Heart. He had joined the military two years earlier and was on his second tour of duty in Iraq. He'd planned to come home in January, before being redeployed somewhere else.
